Vitamin C in Winter? Yes — Here’s Why

Vitamin C in Winter? Yes — Here’s Why

Vitamin C is the ingredient most people associate with summer — sun protection, radiance, SPF partners. So it tends to get quietly dropped from routines around June, filed away with the sunscreen and the lighter layers.

It’s one of the more understandable skincare decisions. And also one of the more counterproductive ones.

Why winter is actually the better season for Vitamin C

In summer, the skin is working hard to defend against UV damage. Antioxidants like Vitamin C get used up faster, protective responses are activated constantly, and the skin’s baseline stress is higher. In winter, UV levels drop significantly across New Zealand — particularly in the South Island, where July days can be short, cool and overcast. That lower UV load means the skin is less reactive and better positioned to actually absorb and respond to actives like Vitamin C.

There’s also the dullness issue. One of the most common winter skin complaints — that flat, grey, tired-looking complexion that sets in around mid-July — is exactly what Vitamin C addresses. Slower cell turnover, sluggish renewal, reduced radiance: Vitamin C supports all of it, helping to even skin tone and bring back a natural luminosity.

The irritation myth

One reason people avoid Vitamin C is the reputation it has for causing irritation — redness, tingling, sensitivity, particularly with pure ascorbic acid forms. It’s not unfounded: unstabilised Vitamin C can be reactive, especially on skin that’s already a little compromised in winter.

Stabilised forms of Vitamin C work differently. When Vitamin C is stabilised — typically by binding it to a molecule that holds it stable until it’s absorbed — it releases gradually into the skin, delivering the brightening and antioxidant benefits without the hit of high-concentration pure acid.

That makes it genuinely suitable for winter, when the barrier is more easily irritated and a gentler approach is worth prioritising.

Getting Vitamin C into a winter routine

The simplest approach is to pair a Vitamin C active with the hydration your skin is already asking for in winter — so you’re building brightness into a routine that’s already working.

Bio-Retinol + C Booster A concentrated evening booster combining plant-based retinol with Vitamin C to support overnight renewal. Winter nights are long, and the skin’s repair window is genuinely one of its most productive periods — applying something that supports both renewal and radiance before bed makes the most of it. A few drops pressed into the skin after cleansing, before a richer moisturiser, is enough.

Hyaluronic Serum 200Pairs beautifully with a Vitamin C booster by providing the hydration layer underneath. Vitamin C works better in well-hydrated skin — it’s less about the product doing more and more about the conditions being right.

Rosehip Miracle Oil A natural source of Vitamin C precursors, as well as essential fatty acids that help replenish and soften winter-dry skin. Rosehip oil has a warmth and richness that feels genuinely right in winter — pressed between the palms and smoothed over the face as the last step in an evening routine, it’s the kind of moment that makes the whole ritual feel worth it.

One to look forward to

Something new is arriving in July — a dedicated Vitamin C moisturiser that brings together stabilised Vitamin C, Maca Root and Centella Asiatica for a daily glow companion that works morning and evening. Worth keeping an eye out for.
